In Choosing the Double Bass...

When choosing a double bass, the body and accessory woods are an important factor that determines the character and quality of the double bass. Make sure that the parts of the instrument such as the fingerboard, peg and tail are made of ebony, a hard and durable wood, not a soft and ordinary wood painted black.

Additionally, student-level instruments should be checked and properly adjusted by a luthier (string instrument maker/repairer).
