In Cello Selection...

When choosing a cello, the body and accessory woods are an important factor that determines the character and quality of the cello. Make sure that the parts of the instrument such as the fingerboard, peg and tailpiece are made of ebony, a hard and durable wood, not a soft and ordinary wood painted black.

Additionally, student-level instruments should be checked and properly adjusted by a luthier (string instrument maker/repairer).
